About Me

My name is Terence McDermott welcome to my site. Since my childhood I have always been fascinated with construction and how things work, making things from whatever material was available to me.

Being from London originally and now living in South East my time is spent both in London and Norfolk which has given me an excellent contrast and inspiration between the two. My primary focus is combining art, design and craft into my works with a strong belief that form and function go hand in hand and making something that is beautiful and aesthetically pleasing can also be functional too…

I love to work with all sorts of materials from natural timbers to fabrics, emphasising on

the natural grains and textures with a strong ethos of sustainability and environmentally friendly methods.

I often visit house clearance shops, markets and auction houses on the hunt for something that needs to be re-loved. Being able to restore and reupholster a piece of furniture that would otherwise be thrown away is fantastic, giving it a new lease of life for today’s modern living as well as your own stamp of individuality.

I initially trained at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication studying a Degree in Furniture and Related Product Design, this was hugely detailed and spanned greatly over a vast array of different subjects from history of design to CAD and life drawing, learning all aspects of design, process and
visualisation. During my time at Ravensbourne I was able to work on projects with companies and organisations to include Vitra, Bloomberg, Philips and Sussex University.

After my Degree I wanted to gain experience within a commercial environment, getting to know the customer and modern design more. I worked at a well know design store for six years which allowed me just that opportunity and experience, dealing with not just the customer and contemporary designs; often visiting suppliers and manufacturers in Europe and Scandinavia, immersing myself in the classics designs of Eames, Eileen Gray, Le Corbusier, the list goes on... And not to forget new designs and designers.

During this time I continued my study at the London Metropolitan University, Sir John Cass School of Art, Media & Design, formally known at the London School of Furniture. I completed my City and Guilds in Furniture Making and Restoration in 2008 and achieved a 'Commendation of Achievement of Design and Professional approach to Furniture Making'.

With an interest in upholstery I wanted to marry up my skill sets in the hope to combine my design and making ability with upholstery. By studying Traditional and Modern Upholstery techniques for a further three years gave me the ability to develop my skills further and move on to new ideas.
